Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for managing the care of adult consumers experiencing psychiatric/mental health disorders including substance abuse or addiction. The RN provides medication/somatic treatment services in conjunction with the team psychiatrist, which may include obtaining vital signs, medication administration and monitoring, mental health assessment, consumer and family education including mental illness, medication risks and benefits, side effects, and medication and symptom self-monitoring and management. .The RN will provide services that he/she has been credentialed to provide. Additionally, they are to function as a member of the interdisciplinary team and participate in case reviews, conferences, and clinical team meetings as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current, valid, unrestricted license (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions) in good standing in the District of Columbia
- Adult psychiatric/mental health nursing experience within the past two years
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Certificated through the American Heart Association/American Red Cross
- American Heart Association- CPR for Healthcare Provider certification
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and teaching skills
- Maintain skills and privileges through continuing education, conferences, and in-service training
- Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) preferred
Reporting Relationships:
- Serves as a qualified practitioner within the designated scope of professional practice and receives supervision consistent with the MHRS Certification Standards. The RN may receive general administrative direction from their supervisor. Clinical guidance will be received from a psychiatrist on all psychiatric and medical functions as needed. Is this clinical supervision? If so, then clinical supervision will be provided by the medical director?
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct individualized nursing assessments, which will meet the certifying body’s standards.
- Administer prescribed medication to consumers and/or instructs a member of the family or the consumer in self-medication recognizing when to consult with a psychiatrist or other treatment team member.
- Assist in the development of and provides professional nursing care in accordance with an Individual Recovery Plan (IRP) for adults.
- Provide linkages to outside providers of mental health and primary health care services.
- Counsel and teach consumers and families the techniques or positive health care measures and assists them in understanding, accepting and adjusting to the implications and responsibilities of their diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
- Treatment plans/Authorizations: Ensure that consumers serviced have active and up to date treatment plans with authorizations as required by Medicaid, DBH and other payers of services.
- Clinical Documentation: Complete service notes within same day of services or at a minimum 2 days from services provided. Record the actual time of all services provided, without estimating or rounding.
- Provide care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the consumer’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
